Sunflowers, by Miss Williams

Date: 18th Jul 2017 @ 7:31pm

In Science this half term, we have been investigating plants and trees and using our observation skills to draw and label the different parts. As part of our learning, we planted our own seeds and observed their growth. The children loved planting the original seeds and are still talking about them now. Thank you for sharing your photographs of the sunflowers at home, keep them coming!

Newsletter

Dear Parents / Carers

As we approach the end of the school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your support and patience. As the year has progressed, we have all been challenged as the new building has taken shape, but at last we now have facilities which will only enhance the learning of the children.

Attainment

As a school we are pleased with the continued progress of the children at High Street. The National picture requires schools to get the children in their care to ever increasing standards by the end of each year group. To support this a new National Curriculum was introduced in 2015; this is still being embedded across all schools and raises the bar which children are required to reach.

Phonics

This year the children at High Street have achieved well, with 79% of the pupils in Y1 achieving the National standard during their end of year group assessments. This compares well and places us broadly in line with schools nationally. Of the children who did not reach the standard, additional support will be provided to help them achieve during the next academic year.

KS1 Results

These show the progress of the children at High Street and build on the starting points of the children. In all areas we are still slightly below the national percentages (2016) achieving the expected standards. However, as a result of the hard work being undertaken, more children are now in line with where they should be compared to where they were when they started school or where they were at the end of Reception. Should this progress continue we will be looking to equal or better the national percentages with this cohort at the end of Year 6.

KS2 Results

These demonstrate the progress of the children in the cohort and compare favourably to the National percentages for 2016. In reading and writing our combined results place us broadly in line with schools nationally but slightly below our counterparts in maths. However in spelling, punctuation and grammar we are well above the national percentages for 2016.

Some of the highlights of the year

During the year we have been very proud of the achievements of the children. As indicated their progress in their work has resulted in more children reaching the new higher standards of the national curriculum and of those who have not our tracking systems illustrate how well they have also done.

Residential Visits

Many pupils have taken the opportunity to attend their annual residential visits and/ or day visits and have developed their understanding of different topics through the first hand experiences on offer. This type of activity would not be possible without your support, which we are extremely grateful. Plans are already being developed for a full programme of visits for next year to support the learning of the children.

Outdoor Learning

All children have experienced outdoor learning on the school site. This has been well received by the children and sees them develop new skills in a safe secure environment. Next year we will be looking at developing the woodland area further to support Forest School activities.

Sports

Sports events both in and out of school have been a major feature of the school year with children from across the different year groups representing their school team or the school at events in the locality. Chris Story from the Vale Royal Schools’ Sports Partnership (which we are a member) commented recently that he always knows which team are representing High Street as they are always competitive but also demonstrate a positive sporting attitude. This year we should be in line to maintain our Sainsbury’s Gold Sports Mark through the events and clubs which have been on offer.

World of Work

This was a great success, with the children from each year group working on mini enterprises and then sharing these last Thursday for parents and members of the community. Through this process, the children learnt about money, making products to sell and devising how and when to sell these. The profit raised by the children will be used to purchase additional equipment for play times. Well done to all concerned! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the PTA for supporting the evening with their tombola, cake stall and selection of small stalls in the large hall.

Arts Events

During the year children from the different year groups have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of assemblies and / or productions. It has been wonderful to see so many perform in front of parents and friends. Well done to all concerned! This week the Year 5 will be joining staff and students at the Winsford Academy to perform a dance as part of the production of Grease and the Y6 will be performing their leavers’ production entitled Cinderella Rockafella for the children from other year groups and for their parents on Wednesday Evening. We wish both sets of children every success! Thanks also to all of the staff for helping them to put the shows together.

Building Programme

As indicated we are reaching the conclusion of the building programme. During the summer holiday, the wall between the MUGA level and the upper level will be reinforced and fencing placed along the top for the safety of the children. In addition, the temporary steps leading from the lower to the upper level and those outside the Y3 entrance will be reconstructed to provide a permanent solution.

September

As indicated on the school calendar, which can be found on the school website by clicking the icon, the school will reopen for the children on Tuesday 5th September, staff will be onsite on the Monday, should you need to contact the school.

Site Access

From September the new office block will be in operation. Access to this can be made from the doors opposite the Y6 entrance.

Access to the school site will mainly be via the bottom gate adjacent to Kiddicare, and the gate leading from the steps from the Verdin Centre car park. During the holiday it is our intention to have magnetic locks fitted to these gates. This will enable the admin staff to allow you entrance to site once you have indicated who you are via the intercom system fitted to the gates. These locks will not be applied until 9.15am each day once parents have dropped their children off and will be switched off at 3.10pm to allow parental access to the site to collect children.

In addition to the aforementioned access from the High Street will be available at the beginning and the end of the school day from the gate adjacent to the Verdin Exchange and the gate closest to the Chip Shop. The small gate opposite the glass corridor will remain closed at all times for added security. These gates will be operated manually by the site staff as is current practice until we have sufficient funds to have magnetic locks fitted.

Leaver’s Evening Performance

This will be on Wednesday evening 19th July starting at 6.00pm following the performance we would like to invite parents and carers to join us for a celebratory drink and nibbles in the school hall. As we have limited space in the theatre unfortunately we need to limit the number of guests. We will assume 2 guests per child, but should you need to bring additional children then please can you advise your child’s class teacher before the end of school on Tuesday.

Uniform

As you will have noticed some shops have started to advertise ‘back to school’ children’s wear. This always amuses me as it becomes earlier each year! However with this in mind and as you prepare your child for the year ahead, please can you ensure that your child is following the school uniform policy.

Children should wear the following to school on their return in September:

Summer dresses (Light blue gingham check)

White shirt / blouse

Grey / black skirt / trousers / shorts

Blue school sweatshirt

Please note that ties are compulsory from Y3 –Y6 but optional in EYFS / KS1

Black school shoes (NOT TRAINERS)

Thank you for your support with this matter.

Staff Leaving

Please note that Mrs Newbury and Mr Jenkins will leave the school at the end of August to spend more time with their families. May I take this opportunity to thank them both for their service to the school.

Finally may I take this opportunity to wish you all a restful summer holiday.

Mrs Bullen will work Mondays and Tuesdays and Mrs. Moorhouse will teach for the latter part of the week. This model of working is common in most primary schools and will be most effective for the children concerned.

Sports Week

Last week we had a number of children from different year groups participating in a wide variety of sports against other schools in the locality. Each team excelled in many ways and the children concerned were a credit to the school. Of the teams which participated in the competitions our two swimming teams finished first and second respectively, our Y5/6 football team were the overall winners in their tournament with the Y3/4 football team finishing second. All other teams finished well in tag rugby, multi sports, tennis, golf and dodgeball.

Building

We have now taken possession of the new Reception and Year 2 classrooms. The children seem to have settled in really well and are making the most of their time in the facility.

We are now close to having the new entrance and office block handed over to us. However as it is very close to the end of the school year we have decided to move into the new facility over the summer. Further details will be distributed before the end of the school term to indicate how to access the site in September. I would also like to reiterate our thanks for your support during this project, but as time passes I am sure you agree on the benefits that the new facilities will bring.

World of Work Open Evening

This will take place on Thursday 13th July from 5.00-7.00pm. During the evening the school will be open for you to view. In addition the children from the different year groups will be running a series of activities for you to participate in and which are being used to help to develop their understanding of the World the evening the PTA will provide refreshments and will run a selection of stalls including a bottle tombola stall and cake stall. There will also be the opportunity for you to participate in a variety of small games. You will be able gain entrance to the event through the glass corridor or via the Y6 entrance. Should you wish to have your car washed; the Y6 will be providing a service. Access for the car wash can be gained from the Grange Lane Car Park.

We have also been fortunate to have Chester Zoo and a recycling company visit the school to discuss work practice with the children and later next week Rev Page will discuss his role as a vicar and his wife will speak to y1 about her role as a dietician.

We are also grateful of offers from parents to speak to the children about their place of work and for us to take children on visits to their companies. As this is not a standalone project we will be looking at further visits during the coming year. Many thanks for your support.

Non Uniform Day

To help raise funds for additional materials, the PTA will be running a bottle tombola stall during the World of Work Evening. We should therefore be grateful of donations of bottles for the stall. To facilitate this we will be holding a non-uniform day on Monday 10th July. In return for the children coming to school in casual clothing we should be grateful of donations of bottles for the stall. These will be collected at the start of the day by your child’s class teacher.

Cake Stall

If any parents are willing to donate cakes for the PTA cake stall on Thursday 13th July we should be grateful of your support. Donations of cakes should be sent into school on Wednesday 12th or Thursday 13th July.

Uniform on sale

During the World of Work there will be items of ‘good as new’ uniform on sale should you wish to purchase sweatshirts etc. in preparation for September.

Year 6 Residential Visit

The recent Y6 residential visit was a huge success with the children participating in a variety of activities including canoeing, climbing, abseiling, ghyll scrambling and raft building. During the week the children challenged themselves in each of the activities in addition to participating in a 12 mile walk and visiting places of interest. Well done to all concerned!

School Choir

The school choir recently participated in a concert at Crewe Lyceum. They performed a selection of songs in front of a large audience and were a real credit to all concerned.

During the last two weeks a number of visits have taken place including a year 1 Visit to Chester Grosvenor Museum an EYFS visit to Stockley Farm, a year 2 visit to the Lifestyle centre and a year 4 visit to Cadbury World. In all cases the children had a great time and enjoyed the experiences on offer.

During the remaining 2 weeks the y3 children will visit Reaseheath College for a series of workshops on animal management and the work involved in looking after them and the y6 will visit Waterworld to celebrate their time at the school.

Year 6 Leaver’s Performance

This will take place in school on Wednesday 19th July at 6.00pm for all parents / carers of the children in the year group. Following the performance, there will be light refreshments in the school hall and the opportunity to celebrate your child’s time at the school. Please note that we have limited capacity and all brothers and sisters will have the opportunity to see the Y6 performance during the school day.

Chester Grosvenor Museum Visit , by Miss Williams

Date: 4th Jul 2017 @ 4:07pm

We've have had a fantastic day at Chester Grosvenor Museum! The children took part in three different workshops to do with 'Toys Through Time' including making thier own olden day toy, learning about and handling toys through the ages and visiting a period house with a variety of artefacts. The children were very well behaved and all said how much they had enjoyed the day.

A fantastic trip with fantastic children!

Mathmagicians!, by Miss Williams

Date: 23rd Jun 2017 @ 12:46pm

Y1 have had lots of fun today making potions in maths. This week we have been learning about capacity and today we finished off by making weird and wonderful potions. We had to follow the instructions and measure out the correct amount of each ingrediant.

The children have loved this topic and today's lesson especially. Follow us on twitter @Y1HiStPrimary to see more of our learning as it takes place.

Dear Parents / Carers

Spelling Bee

Last Tuesday representatives from Y3 – Y6 performed in the Winsford Education Partnership Spelling Bee held at the Winsford Academy. The children competed against pupils from the other primary schools in a town ‘spelling showdown’. All of our children performed really well and were a credit to the school, with Korbyn and Kaitlin (Y6) being the winner and runner-up in their age band. Lyla and Henry also were the winner and runner up in their age band (Y5), Tyler and Alexia (Y4) and Joshua and Jessica (Y3) all being placed in the top 10 for their age group. The children were informed by the Academy that they were the best spellers out of approximately 320 children per year group across all the schools in Winsford- What a fantastic achievement- well done to all concerned!

Sports Days

It was lovely to see so many of you last Friday for Winsford High Street School Sports Day. The weather was just right; fine and dry without being too warm. The children performed extremely well and seemed to enjoy the experience on our new field. Congratulations to the members of the Over team who were the overall winners in EYFS and KS1 sports and to the children from the Wharton team who were the overall winners for the KS2 sports afternoon.

Intra-School Sports Swimming Gala

Last Tuesday we organised a mini swimming gala between the school teams. The children swam really well and were very supportive of each other. The children from Over were the overall winners of the gala, although there were some strong performances from children across the different teams. Well done to all concerned!

Year 6 Residential Visit

This week I will be leading the Y6 residential visit to the Lake District. Mrs Lowe will be joining the visit from Thursday, but until Wednesday pm she will deal with any issues which need attention. From Thursday am for the remainder of the week, Mrs Taylor will deal with any issues should they arise. I will also be in regular contact with school during the week.

New Build

I am delighted to inform you that our Reception children have moved into their new classrooms today. Last week we were finally given permission to move the furniture into this section of the building and following two late nights which saw the staff relocate the furniture, the classrooms were ready for occupation. On my return from the Y6 residential visit, I will organise open sessions for all parents to view the new block.

The Y2 children will move into their classrooms during the next two weeks. Unfortunately at the eleventh hour we experienced a problem with water heaters in their classrooms, which will need to be rectified prior to occupation.

The office block will be ready in three weeks, should all go to plan! This week the contractors will be opening the link between the new office area and the Y3 corridor. To facilitate this, the Y3 children will be taught in the Y6 classrooms until Friday 23rd as the Y6 will be off site on their residential visit. This should enable the contractors to progress at a faster rate without having to cater for the movement of pupils. Further details will be distributed as soon as we have a date for occupation.

As previously noted, I would like to thank all concerned for your patience whilst the school redevelopment has taken place.

Kind regards

Mark Joule

Head Pupils, by Mr Thorburn

Date: 14th Jun 2017 @ 8:08pm

On the same day as our country was voting in the general elections, High Street held their own elections for a Head Girl and Head Boy. Every child in the school voted for one of our eight candidates, who had delivered their manifestos in a school assembly. Following their speeches, the candidates also visited all the classes within the school to answer any questions the voters had.

It was a very successful day at High Street and a huge well done to everyone involved. Check out the photos and videos below.

Attendance, by Mr Joule

Date: 12th Jun 2017 @ 10:47am

Well done to the children in 4OF. Last week they had the best attendance record for all KS1 / EYFS classes with 98.8%! They have won the attendance cup for EYFS / KS1 this week and each child will receive an additional 5 team points.

Congratulations also to the children in 16SF in Year 5, they won the attendance cup for the classes in KS2 with an attendance of 97.7%. The children will also receive an additional 5 team points for their efforts.

Dear Parents / Carers

Manchester Fundraiser Event

Many thanks for your support for the Manchester Fundraising non uniform day on the last day of the term. As a result I am delighted to inform you that £703.22 was donated to support the families of the victims of the recent atrocity.

EYFS / KS1 Sports Morning Friday 16th June

This was scheduled for this Friday morning 9th June from 9.30am on the new school field.

However having seen the weather today and looked at the long range forecast it appears that more heavy rain is due during the week. This will make the field dangerous and too wet even if the weather on Friday turns out to be good. We have therefore taken the decision to move the KS1 / EYFS sports to Friday 16th June starting at 9.30am. I hope that this advanced warning enables you to make the necessary arrangements to be able to join us and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

KS2 Sports

As previously indicated this will take place during the afternoon of the 16th June starting at 1.15pm.

Access for Sports Days

Parents’ access to the field will be via the field gate to the rear of Kiddicare. To maintain the safety of the children on site all visitors will be asked to sign in on the sheet provided and to indicate which child(ren) they will be watching. The gates to the remainder of the school will be locked for the safety of the children not taking part in the event. These are just precautionary measures but in light of recent events we feel they will be the best way of keeping the children safe. Please can I also request that all visitors stay behind the spectator barrier and do not cross the track to the children. Finally please can you ensure your child has applied the relevant sunscreen prior to the event and has an appropriate hat and water bottle. Many thanks in anticipation of your support.

Attendance

As I am sure you are aware we believe that attendance matters. Without being in school on a regular basis children can struggle to learn and gaps develop in their understanding due to them having missed vital lessons. From this week we will be helping the children to focus more on achieving a high percentage of attendance by rewarding all pupils who are in school for the full week (100% of the time) with a raffle ticket. These will be equal to 5 team points and will be placed in the tombola drum at the end of the term for the termly draw. The more tickets the children achieve the more team points they will gain and the more chance they will have of winning one of the prizes chosen by the school council.

In addition, the overall attendance percentage will be calculated for each class at the end of every week and a cup will be presented on the following Monday.

Internet Safety Newsletter

As a school we are constantly faced with discussions with the children over the inappropriate use of the internet and look to educate them on how to use it safely. Please find attached further guidance

Lead Pupils (Head Girl / Boy)

With the general election looming and causing a great deal of debate, we have decided to hold our own election this week for two new posts. Prior to the holiday, the children in Y5 (next year’s Y6) were asked if they would like to stand for the position of Head boy or Head girl for the next academic year. There was a very positive response with a large number of the Y5 children writing letters stating why they should be considered for the positions. Today they have spoken in front of their year group to state their cases for being elected. As a result the Y5 have voted and the names of 4 boys and 4 girls have been placed in a school ballot which will take place on Friday. Prior to the event the candidates will visit the different classes to explain who they are and state their case for why the other children should vote for them.

The winning children will represent the school on the Winsford Partnership Forum during the next academic year and will help to lead the school council and pupil forums. In addition they will be asked to talk to governors and support in the showing round of visitors to the school.

Obstacle Course Fundraiser

The School Council has organised an obstacle course, which will take place this Wednesday (7th June) during the school day. The School Council is hoping to raise money to donate to the Race for Life Charity and also purchase some new additional play equipment that can be used during break times. All classes from Year 1 to Year 6 will be given the opportunity to take part in the obstacle course for a £1 entry fee. Children’s times will be recorded and there will be a prize for the fastest KS1 and KS2 pupils.

Building Work

Yet again I seem to be writing to inform you that we are nearing completion of Phase 1 (the classroom block). For all of you who have had a building programme at home you will understand the frustrations we have been going through as one date leads to the next! However, I am pleased to be able to say that we are very hopeful of a formal handover of the new block later this week.

The builders are also making good progress with Phase 2 as you will notice as you enter school. This is only a short time from completion and will lead to improved access once complete.

The steps to the rear of Y3 and the retaining wall which runs between the lower MUGA level and the upper level will be completed during the summer holiday to avoid further disruption.

As always please accept our thanks for your understanding during the build; I am sure you will be delighted with the finished products.

Kind regards

Mark Joule

Newsletter

Dear Parents / Carers

Manchester

With the news of the sad events in Manchester on Monday of this week, I would like to inform you that we have held a minutes silence today to enable the children to think about the families of those lost and ways in which people can support them. This has been done at the appropriate level for the children in the different year groups. In addition we will be holding a non-uniform day tomorrow to raise funds for the families of those who have lost loved ones. Should the children wish to come to school in more casual clothing for the day, then we ask that they make a donation which will be sent to the relevant people. Many thanks for your support with this matter.

KS2 Sports

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to move the KS2 sports afternoon from 9th June to Friday 16th June from 1.00pm; apologies for any inconvenience which this may cause.

New Website

Please note that our new website is now live and contains lots of information about the school. Over the next few months the children will gradually be given passwords for a safe area of the site which will contain further details for them and on which they will be able to share their work. Furthermore as parents you will be provided with a log in at the start of the new academic year. This will enable you to access areas of the site and make payments for visits etc. through the relevant facility.

Term Dates for 2017-18

Please note that these have been posted on the new website. Please pay close attention to these to avoid holidays during term time.

Building Work

We are very hopeful that the new classroom block will be ‘handed over’ towards the end of next week. Once this has taken place we will look to move in towards the end of the first week following our return after the half term. We were looking to move in during the half term break but unfortunately additional boxing in of pipes and the connection of the gas main needs to be completed before we do so.

Many thanks for your support in helping us to allow the contractors more access to the area around the new office block to complete the drainage. This has speeded up the process and should result in the office block being handed over towards the middle of June. We will keep you informed of the progress and advise you of when the new offices will replace the old ones.

Sunny Weather

With the advent of the sunnier weather please can I remind you to get your children to apply sun cream before school. In addition it may be appropriate to send your child to school with a sun hat to protect them during the break times. Please can we also remind you to send your child to school with a water bottle to keep them hydrated during the warm periods.

Wrap Around Care

Please note that all bookings and payments for the before and after school club need to be made online.

Should you experience any difficulty in doing so, please contact Mrs Collins in the school office who will guide you through the process.

New Classes

During the coming weeks, the staff will ask the children to identify three pupils from their cohort that they work well with and who they feel are their friends. We will then look to allocate the children to their new classes based on this information as well as on the different personalities in each class. This is a process we have undertaken in the past and one that helps us to support the needs of the children as they develop and progress through the school.

School Half Term

The school will close for the half term break at 3.15pm on Friday and will reopen for the children on Monday 5th June.

School Nursery

Year 1 Aboriginal Art , by Miss Williams

Date: 21st May 2017 @ 5:26pm

In year 1, we have been busy creating our own Aboriginal art work. First of all we studied and discussed Aboriginal art work and picked out the shapes and colours we liked best. Then we chose the materials that we needed to create the small dots. We really enjoyed painting using different techniques and we shared our finished art work in our sharing assesmbly on Friday.

Disruption, by Mr Joule

Date: 19th May 2017 @ 5:21pm

Friday 19th May

Many thanks for your understanding when collecting your children this evening.

Unfortunately the builders cut into an electrical cable and therefore the pathway onto the green carpeted area was not considered to be safe.

We are hopeful that this problem will be solved over the weekend.

The new classroom block is nearing completion and we will hopefully gain possession of it just after the half term break.

High Street Year 6 Weekly Newsletter

As the weeks continue to fly by, our final week before Easter is approaching imminently!
Friday provided some “Comic Relief” as the children came in dressed with their clothes inside out and their hair styled in a unique manner.
Thank you for all your contributions towards a worthy cause!

What did we do over the last week?

  • English – the children had the opportunity to invent their very own “Warning Tales”. As Internet Safety Week had recently passed, the children used this as the context for their tales. The children’s characters received a variety of warnings including: keeping their social media accounts protected and being wary of talking to strangers online! Of course, in their tales the main character did not take heed of their warning and they promptly learnt their lesson.
The children’s writing was of a high quality and they undoubtedly enjoyed telling their tales!

  • Maths – we seized the opportunity to sit maths assessments. This provided the ideal rehearsal for the end of key stage tests in May and also gave the children an awareness of the concepts they need to “brush up on” over the coming weeks!

  • SATs Meeting - Thank you to all who attended the SATs meeting on Tuesday evening. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint presented during the evening is available to download from our school website. If you have any questions regards SATs, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

  • Heartstone Odyssey – our work on the Heartstone Odyssey continued as our main character experienced the potentially harmful effects of “stereotyping”.
The children then discussed stereotyping that they had experienced and how it made them feel – a very purposeful and valuable debate!

What’s happening this coming week?

  • Maths – we will begin focussing on shape and the differing properties of a variety of 2D and 3D forms. This will lead in to work on angles, co-ordinates, translation and transformation.

  • English – we will be sitting practice papers in Reading and GPaS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling). Once again, this will assist us in identifying areas to focus on after Easter.

  • Topic – the children will be conducting a study of the city of Rome. The children will consider its foundations, location, climate, popular culture and even the occupations that propelled the city to prosperity.

What can you do at home to support our learning at school?

Challenge your child to explain some of the key terms used in our teaching of English. Can they define the different word classes: noun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, pronoun and contractions?

The CGP study guides can be used to check their responses!

Have a magnificent week.
