Dear Parents

Mr Joule

Mr Joule successfully had his operation on Monday of last week, and arrived back home on Wednesday to fully recuperate. He is in regular contact with me and I’ve been keeping him updated on the day to day running of the school. I’ve already passed on some well wishes from children and parents and these have made him feel greatly missed, whilst he is off.

 

Harvest Festival Celebration Services

Our Harvest Festival services will take place in a variety of venues this year led by children from different year groups.

  •      The EYFS (Nursery and Foundation Stage) children’s services will be held in the school hall on Friday 11th October at 9.15am and 2.45pm. Parents of Nursey children are invited to attend the first performance. Parents of FS are invited to attend the afternoon service due to the number of spaces available.

 

  •       The Key Stage 1 service will be held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church on Tuesday 15th October at 9.30am. Please note this is a change of date as the Church can now no longer accommodate us on the original date. (Year 1 parents are invited to attend, as these children will lead the service). Y2 children will form the choir, but unfortunately there will not be sufficient space to accommodate the parents of these children. There will be opportunities later in the term for these parents to see their children in other performances.

 

  •      The Year 3 children will be leading the KS2 service with Y5 at the United Reform Church on Thursday 10th October at 9.45am.  (Year 3 and 5 parents are invited to attend with the Y3 leading the service with Y5 as the choir).

 

  •      The Year 4 and Year 6 children will take part in a Harvest Service led by Y3 at school. Unfortunately we can’t accommodate parents, but there will be opportunities later in the term when these children will take the lead and parents will be invited.

 

  •       As part of our Harvest Services this year we will be collecting food contributions in support of the ‘Mid Cheshire Foodbank’ which supports families in need through low income, who are in debt or who are experiencing Benefit delays. (Contributions of dried foods, biscuits, cakes and tinned produce can be brought into school from Monday 30th September onwards).

 

 

Closing Date for Reception School Applications

Please note the closing date for applications for children to start at Primary School in September 2020 is 15th January 2020. If you have a child who is due to start at this time, please do not automatically assume that they will gain a place at the school because they have an older brother or sister at High Street or have attended our Nursery provision. All applications for children starting school need to be made through the Local Authority. Further details can be obtained from Wyvern House or through the school office.

 

We will be holding tours of the school for prospective parents on the following dates. Should you wish to attend or know someone who would like to view the school, with a view to them sending their child to High Street, please contact the school office on 01606 288188 to book onto one of the tours:

High School Applications

Can I also remind parents of children in Year 6 that the closing date for High School places is October 31st 2019. Please make sure that you apply for your child’s High School place before the deadline, to ensure that you get one of the choices of schools you’ve opted for. Last year we had a small minority of parents who missed this deadline and didn’t get any of their choices of High School.

 

Macmillan Coffee Morning

This was a great success with many parents and friends of the school dropping in for a coffee and piece of cake. As a result a total of £177.09 was raised for the charity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind donations. I should also like to thank the parents who donated cakes for the sale and to the members of the school council who supported the sale of cakes and coffee during the morning/ after school event.

 

Sickness

We have had a small number of children with sickness and diarrhoea over the last few days. We will be reminding children to wash their hands regularly to fight off any bugs in school but please could you reinforce this at home. Also can you assist us in sending your child back to school no less than 48 hours after their last bout of sickness/ diarrhoea to limit the spread of any bugs in school.

Climate Change 'Strike' Action Day, by Mr Bratt

Climate Change Action Day

Friday 20th September

On Friday 20th September, children around the world will be peacefully protesting against climate change. To enhance their learning of global issues, pupils at High Street will be observing the worldwide school strikes in support of climate change action by having their own 'strike day'. All children will come to school as usual but rather than their usual lessons, they will learn about climate change through hands on activities and thinking about how they can have a positive impact. They will have the opportunity to learn more about current global issues and begin to develop their own views. Our aim is for our children at High Street to feel well informed about global issues and empowered to affect change.

Gates

As we returned from the school holidays we reviewed the gate opening times with a view to improving the security of the site and the safety of the children.

 

Last year the gates were opened up from 2.50pm, but a number of parents still tried to enter the site earlier, which posed a problem, as the children were often still using the playground for lessons. We therefore felt that this compromised the security of the site and the safety of the children.

 

With the aforementioned in mind we have trialled opening the gates at a later time each day, but this has highlighted issues for some parents collecting from the Nursery and also from main school.

We have therefore decided to try to remedy the issues identified, by opening the Nursery Gate off the High Street at 2.55pm and the other main gates at 3.00pm; starting with the gate by Kiddicare followed by the gate at the bottom of the steps of the Verdin Car Park and then the gate off the High Street. This will enable the children to make the most of the playground for lessons before the time specified; the staff will also take the children into school at 3.00pm each day to ensure the safety of all concerned.

Year 6

Each year we ask the Y6 to apply for different roles across the school. These include Safety Officers, Art Leaders, Librarians, Play Leaders and Sports Leaders to name but a few. These have been allocated and the children will now be trained in each area. We look forward to them undertaking their roles.

Absence

Unfortunately I write to inform you that I am likely to be absent from school, as I am due to have an operation on the 23rd September. In my absence, Mrs Lowe will assume the majority of my daily duties, although I will still be in contact with the school. Mrs Taylor, Mrs Robbins, Miss Garnett and Mr Askey will support Mrs Lowe during this period. Sadly I was not able to persuade the National Health Service to admit me during the summer holidays, but hopefully I will be back sooner rather than later.

 

Macmillan Coffee Morning

We will be holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 25th September from 9.30am until 11.00am in the school hall. All proceeds from the morning will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Research. If you are able to support this event by donating some cakes which can be sold by the school council members, then please can you send them into school on Tuesday 24th September.  Access to the coffee morning will be from the Upper Verdin Car Park gate and through the glass corridor. We hope that you can join us.

 

 

Head Lice

Unfortunately, we have had a few cases of head lice reported in school. Please can you check your child’s hair this weekend and treat if required. Please can we also remind you that all children with long hair (girls and boys) should have their hair tied back to reduce the chance of spreading head lice. Thank you for your support with this matter.

 

Parents / Teacher Meetings

These will be held during the week beginning 14th October. A further letter will be distributed nearer to the time. However, should you need to discuss any matters with your child’s class teacher, please don’t hesitate to contact them.

We will be holding a series of tours around the school on the following dates for parents who may wish their child to start at High Street in September 2020:

PTA Meeting

The PTA Committee will be meeting at High Street on Monday 16th September at 3.30pm to discuss fundraising activities and activities to support the children. All parents / friends of the school are welcome to attend. Please note that there will be a member of staff to look after children during the meeting.

 

High School Applications

Please note that if you have a Y6 child who is due to start High School in September 2020, then you need to apply for a place at your chosen High School by 31st October 2019. Applications should be made through the Cheshire West and Chester website.

 

Should you have any concerns or wish us to explain something in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact us. As with all school related matters, your first point of contact should be your child’s class teacher. However, if you need further assistance with a matter then a member of the Senior Leadership team will be happy to assist.

Although I will do my best to pop into all of the welcome meetings, this is not always possible. Should I not be there, Mrs Lowe (Deputy Head teacher) or Mrs Taylor (Assistant Head teacher) will be available. Should you need to see me specifically, then please arrange a mutually convenient time, by speaking to one of the ladies in the school office or by emailing for an appointment.

School Dinners
As previously noted, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will continue to receive free school meals. Children in Y3 and above may also qualify for free school meals depending on their family circumstances.

To qualify, parents need to apply for free school meals even if their child currently gets them through the Universal Infant Free School Meal Programme.

Your child might be able to get free school meals (and therefore Pupil Premium) if you get any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

To make an application you need to call Wyvern House on 0300 123 7039. This is a very quick process. Once you have notification that your child is eligible for free school meals you will need to inform the school with the evidence provided.


Uniform
Many thanks to all parents for kitting their children out in the appropriate school uniform. The children looked fantastic today as they embarked on the new school year. It is important that these standards are maintained. Please note that KS2 children should wear the clip on school ties and black school shoes must be worn to and from school.

 

Geography

I am delighted to inform you that we have been accredited with the Silver Quality Mark for Geography. This is a tremendous achievement and a true recognition of the hard work which has been undertaken to develop standards in this area. I would like to thank all concerned for their efforts with this.

 

PE Quality Mark
I am also delighted to inform you that we have been awarded the Gold Quality Mark for Physical Education. This reflects the hard work undertaken to maintain the standard of PE across the school and in the provision of extra school activities. This is the third year in succession that we have received this standard, should we maintain it for another year, and then we will receive the Platinum Mark. Well done to all concerned!


Calendar dates
We are busy scheduling dates for the Autumn terns and the remainder of the year as appropriate. These will be added to the school website for your convenience. The dates for each residential visit have already been added as have school holidays. We will do our best to remind you of upcoming dates on regular newsletters and through Twitter and Facebook.


Scooters / Bikes
Please note that children riding to school on either scooters or bikes must wear a helmet in accordance with the Local Authority guidelines. In addition, children should dismount and push their bikes / scooters from the school gate to the storage area. Sadly on the last day of term a child ran into another child on one of the paths leading from the school. We therefore ask that parents ensure that their children are competent to ride and ensure that the children do not ride through pedestrians. Sadly any child who doesn’t comply with the aforementioned will receive a ban from coming to school on their bike / scooter.

Dear Parents/ Carers

 

As we approach the end of the school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. Throughout the year we have enjoyed working with your child(ren) and seeing them grow and develop in many ways. We look forward to continuing to do so for those who will remain with us in September, but wish those leaving the school, all the very best for the future.

 

Leavers’ 2019

Last night our Y6 children were real stars, performing a short play entitled ‘The Pirates of the Curry Bean’ for their parent’s which was followed by a presentation and drinks / refreshments for all involved. This was a lovely evening for all concerned and one in which the children and parents were able to share their memories of their time spent at High Street.

 

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the 2019 leaver’s together with any other child relocating schools, all the very best for the future. They will all be welcome to visit in the future. ‘Once a ‘High Streeter’, always a ‘High Streeter’.

 

Staff Leavers

As we finish for the summer break, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the following staff for their service to the school, as they move to their new positions: Mr Wright, Mrs Astley, Miss Levis and Mr Thorburn. In addition I would also like to wish Mrs O’Cleirigh a long and happy retirement.

Finally I would like to wish Miss Sugarman all the very best for the future, as she has also secured a position closer to her home.

 

Pyjama Day: 18th July

Thank you for encouraging your child(ren) to participate in the recent Pyjama Day. This was a great success with £418.65 being raised for children requiring organ transplants. A proportion of this will also be used to support Tyler from Y5 in his quest to participate in the Transplant Games. We wish him all the very best in the competition and look forward to hearing how he has got on.

 

Uniform

As you may have noticed some shops have started to advertise ‘back to school’ children’s wear. This always amuses me as it becomes earlier each year! However, with this in mind and as you prepare your child for the year ahead, please can you ensure that your child is following the school uniform policy.

 

Children should wear the following to school on their return in September:

 

Summer dresses (Light blue gingham check)

White shirt / blouse

Grey / black skirt / trousers / shorts

Blue school sweatshirt

Please note that ties are compulsory from Y3 –Y6 but optional in EYFS / KS1

Black school shoes (NOT TRAINERS)

 

 

 

School Meals

We have been informed by Edsential which is the Local Authority corporate group who supply school meals that there will be no increase in the cost of each meal in September and the cost will remain at £2.30 per meal. Please also note that children moving from Y2 to Y3 are no longer eligible for Universal Free School Meals, as these are only applicable for EYFS / KS1 children.

Should you feel that you are eligible for free school meals due to your financial position you can contact Wyvern House on 0300 123 7039 to apply.

 

SIMS Pay 

Winsford High Street Primary school has an online payments system which we encourage parents to use to pay for school meals.

The system we use is known as SIMS Pay which is very easy-to-use and will offer you the flexibility to make online payments whenever and wherever you like, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - safe in the knowledge that payments are secure and use the highest level of card security and that funds will reach the school safely.

Getting started with SIMS Pay online payments

  1. You will already have received an email which includes your child’s unique registration reference for SIMS Pay. If you have not got an email address you will have received a letter which contains your child’s registration number. 
  2. To access SIMS Pay you will need an email address and a Microsoft Account. You can use an existing account if you already have one, or create a new one online – they are free, very easy to setup and you can use any email address and password – to get a Microsoft Account please go to https://signup.live.com.   You can create a Google Account at https://accounts.google.com/SignUp
  3. Please login to SIMS Pay -   https://www.sims-pay.co.uk/Home
  4. When prompted you will need to enter the Invitation code and then your child’s date of birth.
  5. Follow the simple online instructions to register your account.
  6. Please register your new account as soon as possible as the passwords have expiry  

dates. If the password has expired please contact the office.

  1. You will receive a confirmation email – once you have activated your account by clicking the link in the email you will be able to make payments for school meals straight away.

 

If you have any difficulties in registering or using the online payment system please contact the school office.

Celebration Open Evening, by Mrs Collins

Winsford High Street Community Primary School

Summer Open Evening 2019

We look forward to seeing you during our open evening on Thursday 11th July from 5.00pm – 7.00pm

During the evening we will be showcasing work produced by the children during our ‘Curriculum Zoo Project’.

There will be lots for you to see and do!

Nursery: Children will be able to play butterfly games or plant seeds.

Reception: You will be able to enjoy butterfly themed art / craft and sample the Honey flavoured ice cream.

Year 1: You will be able to make / buy pine cone bird feeders. The children will also be selling bird puppets and art work.

Year 2: There will be an opportunity for you to decorate ‘bat biscuits’ as well as making bat bookmarks and bat magnets.

Year 3: You will have the opportunity to participate in some bottle top art. In addition you will have the chance to make fridge magnets based on a sea creature theme.

Year 4:   Should you visit Year 4 you will be able to have a go at painting a songbird or make an Indonesian candle holder. Furthermore you might like to purchase some pick and mix bird food for your garden.  

Year 5: The year 5 children will be running the chocolate sauce café in the main hall.

Year 6: Ever wondered how to make designer craft soap? Well the answer lies in Year 6. You will have the opportunity to make your own bar of soap or to purchase one made by the mini company.          

 In addition there will be a variety of stalls in the small hall being hosted by the PTA as well as small fundraising activities in the main hall.

Dear Parents/ Carers

Exciting News

I am very proud to inform you that Caitlin Smith in Year 5 has been selected to be the Junior Mayor of Winsford for the next year. She will support the Town Mayor at functions and events in the locality. Caitlin will assume her role on Friday 12th July, when officials from the town will visit the school to lead a Mayor Making ceremony for the children. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Caitlin on her appointment, and wish her every success in her role.

 

New Staffing Structure

Please find outlined below our staffing structure for the coming year following the appointment of three new teachers. We welcome Mr Burgess, Mr Rainer and Mr Amarasingh to the teaching staff, in addition to Mrs Lawton and Mrs Raistrick who will be returning from maternity leave.

Please note that Y4 Ouse and Y5 Wandle will have two teachers sharing the class. However as with previous job shares, the governors and I have provided a half day overlap to ensure a smooth transition from one half of the week to the other.

           

New classes

The staff and I will be setting the new classes on Tuesday evening, fusing the returns from the letter which was distributed on Friday. Once these have been sorted, I will inform you towards the end of the week, which class your child will be in for the coming year.

 

Moving up days

The children will then spend time in their new classes on Tuesday 16th (pm) and Wednesday 17th (am). Please note that if your child has a teacher new to the school, we have invited them in to meet the children. Unfortunately as they are currently in different schools this may not be possible. If this is the case, we will be inviting them to meet their new class at a slightly different time, when they are available, although the children will spend time on the days specified with their new class mates.

 

Y5 Bikeability

The Y5 children participated in ‘on the road bike training’ to provide them with the skills to ride their bikes safely in the locality. The instructors commented on how positive they were and on the good behaviour displayed. Well done to all concerned!

 

Sports Week

As a member of the Vale Royal Schools Sports Association, children from the school participated in a variety of sports against children from other schools in the town. It was great to have so many pupils involved in sport in one capacity or another. Well done to all involved!

 

Edge Hill University

The Year 6 children spent an enjoyable day seeing what it is like to be a student at one of the most up and coming universities in the country. They enjoyed a tour of the campus as well as spending time in the PE / Dance studio and in the IT department using the facilities to explore 3d images. A great day was had by all! I wonder how many will pursue a route through university in the future?

 

Celebration Evening Reminder: 11th July 5.00 – 7.00pm

As in previous years we will be holding an open evening on Thursday 11th July. During this, some of the children’s work associated with the Zoo project will be on display and small stalls will be run by the children to promote the world of work. In addition to this, the PTA will be running two tombola stalls and other small stalls as in previous years. Please note that representatives from each cohort may be asked to help during the evening. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

 

Dress Down Day- 5th July

We would like to thank you for your kind donations of bottles / sweets for the PTA. They will be using the items received on their stalls during the open evening. We really appreciate your support with this. Please note that the PTA are also looking for volunteers to help during the evening; if you are able to offer an hour or more, please contact Kelly Thane (PTA Chair) via the school office.

 

Pyjama Day: 18th July

During the year we support many local and national charities through our fundraising efforts. Each worthy cause is decided on by the school council. For our final fundraising day this year, the school council have planned a ‘wear your pyjamas to school day’ and for doing so have asked that the children make a small donation. This will be used to support one of our pupils (Tyler B Y5) to help towards the costs of equipment / transport, so that he can participate in the transplant games. Tyler approached the school council earlier in the year with his request, as he had received a kidney transplant when he was younger and wishes to take part in the transplant games. A proportion of the money raised will also be given to ‘Live life Give Life’ Organisation to support other children in need of an organ transplant.

Dear Parents


As we approach the end of the school year we still have a significant amount to fit into the diary. As indicated in my previous Newsletter we are in the process of recruiting new staff which in itself is time consuming. However we should be able to finalise the staff structure for 2019-2020 by the end of next week.


Please note your child may have candidates teaching their classes this week or next week, so please don’t be worried if they say that they have had multiple teachers. This is part of the selection process with Mrs Lowe, Mr Askey and I observing this week and Miss Garnett joining Mrs Lowe and myself next week as we look to appoint staff for KS1.


Year 3 / 4 Sports Day: Thursday 27th June
As you will be aware we have not had much success in hosting this event although thankfully all other sports afternoons have taken place. Having looked at the diary and the weather forecast for the week we will try to hold this on Thursday 27th June from 1.30pm. I apologise for the late notice but feel that we have to try to run the event as soon as possible to ensure that it takes place this year.


Year 6 Residential Visit
It was a real pleasure to take the Y6 children to the Lake District last week, for what was their final residential visit from High Street. The weather was kind to us, so the children and staff managed to enjoy all of the activities on offer, including ghyll scrambling, canoeing, raft building, paddle boarding, climbing and abseiling. They even completed a 10 mile hike (without any moaning)! Photos of the visit have been posted on our school Facebook page which has been down for a few weeks.


I was very proud of the resilience and determination shown by all children during the week, with many of them overcoming their fears. This should set them well on the path for their transition to High School. Well done to all concerned!


Primary College Day
The children in Y5 spent an exciting day at Primary College on Friday of last week. This is part of the Raising Aspirations agenda which we are part of. During the visit, the children took part in activities associated with childcare, hairdressing and hospitality. Great fun was had by all! Pictures of this can be found on our twitter feed.


Y5 Bikeability
During the next two weeks the Y5 children will be participating in, on the road bike training which should provide them with the skills to ride their bikes safely in the locality. Should any children wish to leave their bikes in school during their training period they can take them to the school hall at the end of the day. However, it is their responsibility to do so.


Sports Week
This week is national sports week. As a member of the Vale Royal Schools Sports Association children from the school will be participating in a variety of sports against children from other schools in the town. Although there is a small competitive element to these events, the emphasis is on skill development, enjoyment and participation. I am sure that all children involved will have an enjoyable time.


Meeting for parents of new starters
Reminder: Should you have a child starting in Reception in September, there will be a meeting at 6.00pm on Tuesday 25th June in the school theatre to explain the induction procedures. We look forward to seeing you then.

Dear Parents

Year 6 Residential Visit

Next week I will be leading the Y6 residential visit to the Lake District. Hopefully the weather will improve and will enable the children to participate in a variety of activities including rock climbing, abseiling, ghyll scrambling, paddle boarding, canoeing, raft building and sailing. During my absence Mrs Taylor will be available should you have any concerns as Mrs Lowe will also be in the Lake District with the children.  

 

Staff Departures

Further to my previous correspondence, I wish to inform you that Mr Wright has also secured promotion and will be joining the senior leadership team at Eaton Primary school in September. I am sure that you will join with me in thanking him for his service to the school and wishing him well for the future. Rest assured we have had a good selection of teachers apply for the vacant posts in the school and the governors and I are in the process of interviewing. As soon as I can I will inform you of the teachers who will be teaching in each year group for

2019-20.

 

London Y4 - 5

I am pleased to inform the parents of the current Y4 children that we have had a very positive uptake for next year’s London visit. Please note that deposits are now required to secure your child’s place.

 

Year 3 / 4 Sports

Sadly we were not able to run the Year 3 / 4 sports as previously planned due to the poor weather. The Y3 / 4 teachers will try to run this again next week on Wednesday 19th June at 1.30pm as previously indicated. Sadly I will not be there to see the children compete as I will be in the Lake District with the Y6. However I feel it important to try as many dates as possible to ensure that the event takes place.

 

PTA

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the PTA for planning and running the school disco on Thursday this week, together with the members of staff who supported the event. The children seemed to have a great time!

 

The PTA have asked me to notify you of a planned non uniform day. This will be held on 5th July prior to our open evening the following week. In return for not coming to school in uniform the children will be asked to bring a bottle or sweets for the tombola stalls; further details to follow.

Dear Parents
 

Welcome back following the half term break. We hope that you all managed to spend some quality family time together over the bank holiday.

 

Year 6 SATs

The Year 6 pupils sat their end of key stage assessments prior to the holiday. We are very proud of how hard they all worked and the positive attitude they displayed and hope that they get the results that they deserve when they arrive.

 

The Zoo Project

Thank you for your support with the visit to Chester Zoo. The children had a fantastic day and learnt a great deal which will support their learning this term. We look forward to welcoming you on 11th July to our open evening, when the children will display some of their exciting work.
 

Year 3 Residential Visit

The Y3 children had a lovely time prior to the half term on their visit to Anglesey. During their stay they visited South Stack Lighthouse and the RSPB reserve. In addition to this they completed a study of Holyhead and visited the Lifeboat Station at Trearddur Bay before spending time on the local beaches. Finally they visited the Sea Zoo prior to returning home.

It was lovely to see the children enjoy all of the activities on offer and spend some quality time with them, but sadly I was required to return home early due to a family bereavement and missed the end of the visit.

 

Sports Days

Whilst the Year 3 were in Anglesey, the Reception and Nursery children enjoyed their sports day and made the most of the dry weather. Well done to all concerned for a super effort!

 

The Year 5/ 6 Sports afternoon will take place this week on Thursday 6th June, weather permitting. A final decision will be made at 10.00am to determine if it will take place and a text message will be sent at this time.

A reserve date of Friday 14th June at 9.30am has been set, should we need to postpone the event this week.

 

The Year 1 / 2 Sports morning will take place this week on Friday 7th June, weather permitting. A final decision will be made at 8.15am to determine if it will take place and a text message will be sent.

Staffing

Mrs Bullen

I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Bullen gave birth to a baby girl prior to the half term break. Mother and baby are doing well. I am sure you will join with me in sending our congratulations to Mr and Mrs Bullen.

 

Mrs Andrews

I am pleased to be able to inform you that Mrs Andrews is expecting her first child later in the year. On completion of this academic year she will cover classes until she starts her maternity leave. I am sure that you join in me in wishing both her and her husband all the very best for their forthcoming arrival.

 

Staff Departures

The month of May always brings a flurry of staff changes, where teachers look for promotion / moves to other schools to suit their needs. This year we will sadly lose three teachers at the end of the summer term, Miss Levis, Mr Thorburn and Mrs Astley who will complete the year with us before leaving High Street at the end of August. The Governors and I are currently working on recruiting quality replacements as we have in previous years.  I am sure that you will join me in wishing all three members of staff well for the future and in thanking them for their time at the school.

Year 6 SATs

The Zoo Project

As I am sure you are aware the main curriculum focus for this term is a project linked to Chester Zoo. Each year group from Y1 – Y6 will be focusing on different aspects of the environment and visiting the zoo on 20th May. The Reception and Nursery children will be spending the day in school studying and handling a variety of mini beasts; the culmination of this work will be on 11th July when the school will be open for you to visit from 5.00pm until 7.30pm. Please add this date to your diary as you will have the opportunity to see the fantastic work which the children have produced. As in previous years, the PTA will also be running some stalls and providing light refreshments.
 

Year 2 Residential Visit

The Y2 children had a lovely time in Hartington. During their stay they visited Chatsworth House and the Blue John Mines in addition to undertaking a study of the village and completing walks around the area. Sadly I was not able to accompany the children on this occasion, due to family illness, but I was delighted to receive an email from a visitor to the area complimenting me on how well behaved the children were and how hard the team of staff worked.

PTA

Easter Egg Hunt

Many thanks to members of the PTA for organising our recent Easter Egg hunt. This was a great success with the children having a very enjoyable time.

Film Night

The PTA also ran a film night (Johnny English) for the children in KS2 on Thursday 25th April. They were delighted by the uptake of tickets. Lots of the children commented to me that they had a great time: Many thanks to the parents and staff who made the event a great success.

Cake Sale

Due to the Y3 children being on their residential visit, the PTA have rescheduled their next cake sale to Friday 17th May. Thanks again to Vicky Raddy for the cakes!

Lost Property

On the evening of the Cake Sale (17th May), we will also be laying out all lost property in the school hall. Please try to pop in to identify lost items. Should items have no name they will be placed in the theatre and offered for resale at minimal cost.

Sports Days

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to reschedule the Y1 / 2 sports day. It will now take place on the morning of the 7th June. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The PTA are struggling for helpers to assist on the refreshment stall for the forthcoming sports days (please see dates listed below). If you are able to offer support please contact Kelly Thane (PTA Chair) via the school office. Unfortunately without your support we will be unable to offer refreshments.

Dear Parents & Carers

 

London

This week I will be leading the Y5 residential visit to London and Mrs Lowe will also be accompanying the party, Mrs Taylor will be in charge at the school in my absence and will be supported by Mrs Robbins, Miss Garnett and Mr Askey, should the need arise.

 

Parent / Teacher Interviews

This term we have restructured our parent / teacher interview timetable. The meetings will be held during the week beginning Monday 25th March with the main evening being Wednesday 27th March. However, in an attempt to improve our service the teachers will be offering their non-contact morning or afternoon for appointments. This will hopefully cater for those parents who would prefer a daytime appointment as opposed to one after school. The timetable for each class will be distributed shortly; you will then be able to book appointments on-line in the normal manner.

In addition to the normal appointments, the staff are busy writing a summary of the information which they will provide you during the meeting. This will form part of the annual report in the summer, with a change in the report format. We will be sending a questionnaire at the end of the year to determine your views on the new process, but would welcome any comments in the interim.

 

Parking

As with all schools, parking continues to be an issue at High Street, although as stated we are lucky to have a number of public car parks so close to the school. However Cheshire West & Chester Council have received reports of incidents concerning the Queens Court Business Centre car park which is not a public car park, but one which a number of our parents seem to be using. These have arisen from the increased amount of pressure placed on the car park.

 

The Local Authority have become aware that on two occasions, children have nearly been involved in traffic accidents on the car park. They have asked me to stress that this is a busy commercial car park which is not a suitable location for children.  Therefore, they have asked that parents do not park in the Queens Court car park or drop children off/collect them from the car park given the safety risks.

 

Please note there is the option of the Grange Lane car park as well as those on the town centre which are easily accessible via the subway. For the safety of your children please try to comply with these requests.

 

Red Nose Day: Friday 15th March
The School Council have again expressed an interest in participating in Red Nose Day this year. They have discussed how to celebrate it and would like the children to come to school on Friday dressed in wacky clothing with wacky hair. For the privilege of doing so, they would like the children to make a donation of a minimum of 50p which will be donated to the charity.

Down Syndrome Awareness
This year the school council have again asked if we can participate in this as a fundraising activity. We have therefore organised a school assembly to raise awareness of the condition. In addition the school council will be selling gingerbread socks which they have sourced from the charity on 20th and 21st March. These can be purchased at a cost of 50p with all proceeds going to the charity. Please note that we have ordered enough gingerbread socks so that each member of the school community can purchase one, although this is not compulsory. On the 21st March, the school council would also like all members of the school to wear odd socks in recognition of our support for this worthy cause.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

 

Welcome back following the half term break. We hope that you enjoyed the additional family time available and were able to make the most of this lovely weather.

 

World Book Day

As in previous years we will be taking part in World Book Day on Thursday 7th March, by continuing to promote and engage children’s interest in reading. This year we are adapting our World Book Day celebrations and instead of asking the children to dress up as a book character, children will create a mask in school with their teachers, which will link to their writing topic that they are currently working on.  Children will also take part in a number of exciting book related activities during World Book Week: The children therefore do not need a costume.

 

In addition to the aforementioned, we are currently in the process of developing our new library. This will be a space where children are able to access a range of books. Instead of donating money for dressing up this year, we would be grateful if each child could instead donate a new or nearly new book for the school library, to be used and enjoyed by children across the school. This could be a fiction, non-fiction or poetry book- the choice is yours.

 

Your child will also be receiving a £1 World Book Day Book Token that can either be exchanged for one of ten special £1 World Book Day books or used towards the purchase of a book to encourage them to develop their own love of reading. The voucher can be redeemed at most local book shops or can be used in school when The Book Fair visits from 5th-8th March 2019.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ukulele teacher is not available to lead the Y2 concerts on 28th February or 7th March as planned.

Fairtrade Fortnight 25th February - 10th March

We are taking part in Fairtrade Fortnight again this year by making baked goods to sell in school. Each child will have the opportunity to bake using Fairtrade ingredients and buy from other classes during two bake sales. The bake sales will be on Thursday 28th February and Tuesday 5th March. The children can bring 50p to buy a cake of their choice at break time on these days. All profit made from the bake sales will go to the Fairtrade Charity.

We ask that you remain vigilant when your children are on the internet as we have been advised of a new online app which encourages children to hurt themselves.  We are led to believe that this is known as the ‘Momo Challenge’ and is described as the WhatsApp ‘suicide challenge,’ which features an avatar of a creepy looking woman with bulging eyes, stringy black hair and a devilish grin telling youngsters to hurt themselves.

We have had a number of children talking about this already in school and will advise them of what to do in the event that this pops up onto their screens. However we felt that it would be useful for you as parents to be aware of this.

Dear Parents & Carers

Car Park

Please can we ask for consideration of others on the Verdin Exchange car park. As stated on previous occasions, if everyone let one other car into the line at appropriate times, then the traffic would flow much easier and the area would be much safer for the children. In addition, one parent has commented that ‘People seem to be arriving late and parking their cars behind the back row, near the entrance for Kiddicare Nursery; these are parents taking their children to the school and are directly behind the cars that are there and not in a parking space. As there are cars in the rows in front, the drivers are unable to get out. A little more consideration would be appreciated please.

Sharing Assemblies

It was lovely to see the Y3 children share their work with parents and then later with other year groups from the school. They spoke very clearly and were a credit to all concerned. Their work was also of a great standard! The Year 1 children also led a sharing assembly the previous week, sharing their work from class, and also that completed during their residential visit. Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but Mrs Lowe commented on how wonderful the children were. I can really believe this, as it was a pleasure joining in with their dance and art work during their residential visit.

Hockey Team

The School Hockey team participated in the Vale Royal Sports Association Hockey tournament last week. Mr Bratt informed me that the organisers were really impressed by their standard of play. They performed really well winning one of their games, drawing two and losing one. This was a super achievement as they played against children from older age groups, which is a good sign for the future. Well done to all concerned!

Athletics

Our Y5 / 6 Athletics team competed in the Vale Royal School Partnership finals on Tuesday. They were fantastic and finished in 4th place overall. Well done to all athletes!

Live Lambing Weekends

We have been asked to share the following which might be of interest to you.

Each year Reaseheath College have live lambing weekends.  It is a great opportunity for families to watch lambs being born, but also to see the college and to discover the possibilities on offer.

There is a charge for the event, but you can make a day of it and visit the zoo at the college as well.  For further details please follow the link:

Half term

Dear Parents & Carers


It has been a busy first two weeks back at school with lots of sports events taking place for some of the older children and the Y1 children taking part in their first residential visit.


Year 1 Children
The Year 1 children participated in their first residential visit to the Tattenhall Education Centre during the first week following the Christmas break. I was fortunate to be able to spend some quality time with them and join in with some of their fantastic dance and art work. The children were a credit to all concerned and showed maturity beyond their years. Well done to all concerned!!!


Football Competition
The Year 5/ 6 teams recently competed in the Crewe Alex tournament during the first week back and qualified for the area finals last week; in doing so they played really well showing skill and enthusiasm. Sadly they did not qualify for the Northern finals, but we are very proud of the efforts they displayed.


Athletics
Last Thursday the Y5 / 6 Athletics team competed against other schools from the Winsford Area in an indoor athletics competition. They all performed to a high standard, demonstrating skills in throwing, jumping and sprinting and were the overall winner. As a result of their success, they will compete on Tuesday 12th February in the Cheshire finals against the winners from the other district areas.


Cross Country Competition
This week our cross country team will compete in the next leg of the Vale Royal Cross Country League. The competition will take place at The University of Chester Academy, Rudheath on Wednesday 23rd January. Unfortunately due to restrictions on the site, no parents will be able to watch the competition on this occasion.
At present we currently stand 3rd out of 14 teams in the league with the team in second only being 5 points ahead. I am sure that you will join with me in wishing all of the children the best of luck!


Netball Tournament
The Year 5 / 6 Netball team will also play this week in the Winsford Education Partnership Tournament of Thursday. We wish them well for the competition.


Zoo Project
I am delighted to inform you that later this year, the school will be participating in a very exciting project in association with Chester Zoo and the Ignite Teacher Alliance. This will focus on the three key areas associated with wildlife and conservation, involving the local environment, endangered species and the effect of palm oil production; it is envisaged that this will become a regular stimulating part of the curriculum, with each year building on the knowledge and skills gained the previous year. Currently the teachers are receiving training in different areas associated with all subject areas, they will then develop stimulating programmes of study for the summer term. In association with the project we are also looking at taking the children from Y1 –Y6 to Chester Zoo for the day on 20th May. Further details about the visit will be distributed in the near future. We are also exploring having a visitor from the Zoo to work in school with the children in Nursery and Reception, which will also supplement the day visits planned for the children.

Dear Parents & Carers

 

Welcome back following the Christmas break. I hope that you managed to have a good festive period and that you also avoided some of the ‘bugs’ which have been around!


Closing Date for School Applications

Please note the closing date for applications for children to start at Primary School in September 2019 is 15th January 2019. If you have a child who is due to start at this time please do not automatically assume that they will gain a place at the school because they have an older brother or sister at High Street. All applications for children starting need to be made through the local authority. Further details can be obtained from Wyvern House or through the school office.

 

Year 1 Residential Visit

The first group of Y1 children have set off on their residential visit to the Tattenhall Centre today; it was lovely to see their excited faces this morning. I will be visiting both groups tomorrow and joining in with their activities. We realise that this is a big step for the children but one which they will enjoy and grow and develop from.

 

Reports / Parents Evenings

This year we will be streamlining our annual reports, but adding an additional parent teacher interview to ensure that you as parents have the most up to date knowledge of the progress which your children are making. The staff will now provide a written summary at each meeting which will form the basis of the final report and will then provide further information on effort and attainment at the end of the year. The next parent teacher interviews will take place during the week beginning 25th  March with two evenings scheduled for appointments on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March. However to accommodate parents who have time available during the day, the staff will also schedule a number of appointments during their planning, preparation and assessment time, as this varies for each teacher individual notifications will be made.

 

Mrs Bullen

I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Bullen is expecting her second child and will start her maternity leave following the summer half term break. We are in the process of sourcing a member of staff to replace her for the final half term. I am sure that you will join with me in wishing her and her husband all the best for their forthcoming arrival.

Dear Parents & Carers


Christmas Parties
This year the parties will again be run by the members of staff and a visit from Santa has been requested. In the past the PTA have provided a small selection of party food, but having reviewed this last year, there was a great deal of waste. This year the committee have decided to provide refreshments in the form of a drink and a cake for all children.


Christmas Performances
We are very proud of all of the children who have participated in the different Carol Services / Nativity productions this year: All children have been given the opportunity to take part in one of the following:


Nursery: Nativity
EYFS: High Street Nativity
Year 1: Are We Nearly There Yet
Year 2 / 3: Nativity / Carol Service at the United Reformed Church
Year 4: Winsford Education Partnership Cantata
Year 5 / 6: Carol Service / Nativity at St Andrew’s.


It was lovely to see and hear the children during the different services and super to see so many family members supporting. Thank you to all staff for their efforts in guiding the children and parents for their support with costumes and in helping the children to learn lines etc.


PTA
The PTA has been busy selling Reindeer Dust and Christmas Raffle tickets to raise funds towards the purchase of a new cycle shelter for the school. Following the draw which was made on Tuesday 18th December the winners of the raffle were:
1st Ms Cornes - 8 inch Christmas cake
2nd Ms Ollier - 6 inch Christmas cake
3rd Ms Johnston - 12 Christmas cupcakes
On behalf of all at the school we would like to thank all members of the PTA for their continued efforts and support and for Vicky Raddy for baking the cakes.


Reading
We are very aware that the children who read regular at home as well as in school make more accelerated progress than those who read less. With this in mind we are looking at ways of promoting reading so that the children develop a love of books. If you could please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes per night and share with you what they have read, we should be grateful.
Extreme Read It has been lovely to see so many pictures of children from each age group participating in our ‘extreme read’. As noted we intend to run this throughout the academic year and during the next summer holidays, so please encourage your child to take part. Photographs can either be handed into the school office or emailed to [email protected]. Please can you indicate on your email if you are happy for the photographs to be posted on social media; this will be done with no more than the initial of your child’s first name. Verdin Car Park
Please may I take this opportunity to ask all users of the car park, to be considerate of others; please can all users avoid parking in the entrance to the car park as this is causing more congestion and prevents the flow of traffic in and out.


We are lucky to have such a facility close to the school, where most schools don’t. If each user shows consideration by letting one person into the queue as they are waiting, then the traffic would flow much easier.
This is not a school owned car park, but it serves the school and therefore children use the facility with their parents.

Swimming
Please note that we have made some changes to the swimming programme, due to changes in personnel at the Lifestyle Centre and the school staff available to deliver the lessons.
The children in Y4 have now completed their lessons for this academic year and have all made good progress. They will swim again during the next academic year.
Please note that there will be no swimming during the spring term for the children in Y3, but they will resume their lessons each Friday after the Easter holiday.
Y5 children will start their swimming lessons following the Easter break.
The Y6 children will start swimming lessons following the Christmas break. They will swim each Tuesday until further notice.

Christmas Jumpers
It has been lovely seeing the children and staff wearing their Christmas jumpers this week. Please note that if your child does not possess a Christmas jumper a normal jumper will suffice with a few small decorations. We are currently still collecting donations from all concerned for wearing the Christmas jumpers, all money received will then be sent to St Luke’s Hospice.

Football Competitions
The Year 5/ 6 teams recently competed in the Winsford football tournament; in doing so they played really well and are currently in first and third place respectively in the local league. We are very proud of the efforts they displayed.

Parent Governor
I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Kirsty Kelshaw has been duly appointed as a parent Governor. Following the closing date for nominations, she was the only parent to have submitted an application and has therefore been appointed to serve on the governing body for a 4 year term. I am sure that you will join with me in congratulating her on her appointment.

 

Maths Challenge

I am delighted to inform you that the following children participated in the Winsford Maths Challenge on Wednesday 21st November.

Year 3: JLO/ OB

Year 4: AD/ LH

Year 5:CS/ SS

Year 6: AC / BW

 

All competitors performed really well with AD coming second in his year group and AC being the overall winner in Y6. Well done to all concerned!

 

Kings School Y5 / 6 Cubic Challenge

I am also delighted to inform you that the two teams of Y5 / 6 children we sent to the Kings School Annual Maths challenge also performed really well with one of our teams being the overall winners. This was a great achievement with the children competing against pupils from schools from all over the Borough. Well done to all, you should be very proud of the trophy in the entrance hall!

 

School Friendship Discos
We would like to extend our thanks to the members of the PTA who organised and ran the school discos with the support of members of staff. All of the children seemed to have a great time and those I talked to, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Children in Need

Thank you for allowing your children to participate in this year’s Children in Need. As a result we have been able to send £471.12 to this worthy cause as well as raise the children’s awareness of the difficulties some children face around the world.

 

Extreme Read

Christmas Jumpers

This year we would like the children to enter the Christmas spirit during the last week of the term, by wearing their Christmas jumpers instead of their usual sweatshirts. If your child does not possess a Christmas jumper a normal jumper will suffice with a few small decorations. In return for doing so we would welcome donations which will be sent to St Luke’s Hospice.

 

 

 

 

 

Grange Lane Incident

Sadly we have been made aware of an incident which happened between two individuals on Grange Lane this morning. In accordance with school policy this has been reported to the police, who will investigate the altercation.

Please may I take this opportunity to ask all users of the car park, to be considerate of others. We are lucky to have such a facility close to the school, where most schools don’t. Please note that there will be no swimming on Tuesday 4th December for the children in Y4 due to them participating in the Winsford Education Partnership Cantata which takes place during the afternoon / evening.

 

The children in Y3 will swim on Tuesday 4th December instead of their usual swimming time on Friday 7th December.

 

As a one off activity and a mid-year review of their swimming capabilities, the Y6 will go swimming on the 7th December from 1.00-2.00pm.

 

Football Competitions

The Year 3/ 4 teams recently competed in the Winsford football tournament, in doing so they played really well and finished 4th and 5th respectively. We are very proud of the efforts they displayed.

The Year 5 / 6 teams competed in the Winsford Mini league. They also performed really well and did not lose a game. Well done to all concerned!

If you have a child in Key Stage Two (Years 3-6) you will shortly be receiving an email which includes your child’s unique registration reference for SIMS Agora. If you have not got an email address you will receive a letter which contains your child’s registration number.

Dear Parents & Carers

Parent Governor
I am delighted to inform you that Mr Nathan Ollier has been duly appointed as a parent Governor. Following the closing date for nominations, he was the only parent to have submitted an application, so he has therefore been appointed to serve on the governing body for a 4 year term. I am sure that you will join with me in congratulating him on his appointment.

 

Unfortunately Mrs N Dormer has had to step down from her role as Parent Governor due to work commitments. We therefore have a further vacancy for a parent governor. Should you wish to apply for the post you will need to complete the nomination form and return it to the school office by 12.00pm on 26th November 2018. If we have more than one applicant then there will be a ballot to determine the successful candidate. Further details and application forms will be available from the school office and on the school website from Monday 12th November. Please note that we are specifically looking for nominations from parents who have a financial or industry background.

 

School Friendship Discos
These will take place on Thursday 8th November and will be run by members of the PTA.

Disco 1  (Year 1- Year 3) 5.00pm – 6.15pm

Disco 2 (Year 4- Year 6) 6.30pm – 7.45pm

As with previous discos entrance and collection will be via the children’s class entrance.

Tickets are still available from members of the PTA who will be selling them before school in the morning. The cost will be £3.50 which includes entrance and refreshments.


Parent / Teacher Meetings
It was lovely to see so many parents / carers at our parent / teacher meetings the week before the break. We hope that you have gained a clear understanding of how well your children are doing in school. Many thanks to the members of the Y6 school council who guided parents to classes during the evenings. Should you need further guidance regards your child’s progress before the next parents evening please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.

No Pens Day
As part of our drive to promote speaking and listening skills the children participated in a variety of learning activities on the day before we broke for half term which involved no writing. These have involved drama and dance activities. This supported the development of the spoken word and was great to see. Well done to all children and staff.

 

Children in Need

This year’s Children In Need day will take place on Friday 16th November.
I have asked the school council to consult with as many children as possible to consider an appropriate fundraiser for the day. They have now reached a decision and would like all children to come to school wearing bright odd clothing. For doing so we would like all involved to make a donation of a minimum of £1.00 to this worthy cause.

Extreme Read
It has been lovely to see so many pictures of children from each age group participating in our ‘extreme read’. It is our intention to run this throughout the academic year and during the next summer holidays, so please encourage your child to take part. Photographs can either be handed into the school office or emailed to [email protected].
Please can you indicate on your email if you are happy for the photographs to be posted on social media; this will be done with no more than the initial of your child’s first name. To see some of our extreme reads please visit @HighStPrimary on Twitter. Well done to all concerned!!!

Payments for Residential visits
Please note that the third payment is due shortly for the London residential visit.

School Photographer
Please note that the school photographers will be visiting school on Tuesday 13th November. As in previous years they will start before school at 8.30am to take photographs of preschool children with their older siblings. They will then take family groups at the start of the school day before taking individual photographs of the children. If you would like to attend the early morning session with your preschool child and siblings please contact the school office to register your interest before lunchtime on Monday 12th November.

 

SIMS Agora (children in Years 3-6 only)

Winsford High Street Primary School now has an online payments system which we would encourage parents to use to pay for school meals for your children.

The system we use is known as SIMS Agora which is very easy-to-use and will offer you the flexibility to make online payments whenever and wherever you like, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - safe in the knowledge that payments are secure and use the highest level of card security and that funds will reach the school safely.

 

Getting started with SIMS Agora online payments

If you have a child in Key Stage Two (Years 3-6) you will shortly be receiving an email which includes your child’s unique registration reference for SIMS Agora. If you have not got an email address you will receive a letter which contains your child’s registration number. 

To access SIMS Agora you will need an email address and a Microsoft Account.

You can use  an existing account if you already have one, or create a new one online – they  are free, very easy to setup and you can use any email address and password – to get a Microsoft Account please go to https://signup.live.com.

  1. Please login to SIMS Agora -  https://www.simsagora.co.uk
  2. When prompted you will need to enter the Invitation code and then your child’s date of birth.

        link in the email you will be able to make payments for school meals straight away.

Parent Governor

Facebook

As a school we are continually looking at ways of keeping you informed of what is happening in school. As a result we will shortly be opening a Facebook page. This will be a means of posting information about school life including year group and school newsletters. However as with all such initiatives we have been required to produce a policy to govern the use of the site. I have included a draft version of this for your reference. Should you wish to make any comments about this, we would be pleased to hear from you. Please note that we will also be reissuing a letter next week seeking permission for us to use images of your child on the different school media sites. This will now be issued annually under the GDPR regulations. If at any time you wish to withdraw the permission given, please contact the school office to do so.

 

Harvest Services

These will be held on the following dates:

Early Years and KS1: Wednesday 10th October at 9.15am at Winsford High Street. This service will be led by the Year 1 children.

KS2: Thursday 11th October at 10.00am at the United Reformed Church, Over. This service will be led by the children from Y3.

This year we will be seeking donations of produce on the morning of each Harvest. This will then be distributed to the Salvation Army to support families in need in the locality.

 

Sainsbury’s Gold Quality Mark

I am delighted to inform you that we have been accredited with the Gold Sainsbury’s School Games Mark for the 3rd year in succession. This recognises the quality of PE provision in the school, including the wide variety of clubs on offer and the number of children involved in PE in the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff for giving their time freely to run a wide variety of clubs in school and Mr Allen for compiling the information used towards the accreditation.

 Cross Country Success

Congratulations to our School Cross Country team who completed in the first league meeting of the season against schools from the Vale Royal Schools Sports Partnership. All children ran really well, with the majority of the team finishing in the top ten positions. Well done to all concerned!

 

Nursery Places

Due to the number of children who have moved into full time education we have limited places available in our Nursery. Should you require a place for your child or would like to make an appointment to view the Nursery, please contact Miss Garnett (Nursery manager) via the school office.

 

Closing Date for School Applications

Please note the closing date for applications for children to start at Primary School in September 2019 is 15th January 2019. If you have a child who is due to start at this time, please do not automatically assume that they will gain a place at the school because they have an older brother or sister at High Street. All applications for children starting need to be made through the local authority. Further details can be obtained from Wyvern House or through the school office.

 

We will be holding tours of the school for prospective parents on the following dates. Should you wish to attend or know someone who would like to view the school, with a view to them sending their child to High Street, please contact the school office on 01606 288188 to book onto one of the tours:

Macmillan Coffee Morning

This was a great success with many parents and friends of the school dropping in for a coffee and piece of cake. As a result a total of £197.82 was raised for the charity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind donations. I should also like to thank the parents who donated cakes for the sale and to the members of the school council who supported the sale of cakes and coffee during the morning.

 

Language on the Playground

Unfortunately it has been reported to me that a number of adults (parents) have been using inappropriate language on the school playground. Please note that this is not acceptable and should we hear it or have it reported to us, then the individuals will be challenged. Should individuals not heed the warning, then we will have no alternative but to ban them from the school grounds. Please note that this is a minority of individuals and that the vast majority of our parents respect our playground space.

 

Primary Science Award

I am delighted to inform you that we have achieved the Silver Award in recognition of the quality of science teaching in the school. May thanks to Miss Price and Mrs Andrews for their hard work in compiling the information required to achieve the accreditation!

 

Football Success

Congratulations to the girls’ football team who were runners up on the Winsford Schools competition on Thursday of this week; they all played really well and were a credit to all concerned!

Draft Facebook Policy

 

 

1          RATIONALE

 

1.1       This policy recognises the increasing number of people using social networking sites that has both a positive and an adverse effect on the reputation of schools in the local community. Many schools, including Winsford High Street Primary School, use social medial as an effective tool for parental engagement e.g. forwarding information through Facebook and Twitter. However, in some cases, parents bypass the complains procedure outlined in the Complaints Policy and have taken to social networking sites to criticise and in some cases make malicious comments about individual members of staff or a school community. 

 

1.2       This policy is to explain the acceptable use of Facebook and to provide a best practise to deal with any potential pitfalls in using Facebook.

 

 

2          WHAT IS FACEBOOK?

 

2.1       Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. The site also has features such as:

  • Marketplace - allows members to post, read and respond to classified ads
  • Groups - allows members who have common interests to find each other and interact
  • Events - allows members to publicise an event, invite guests and track who plans to attend
  • Pages - allows members to create and promote a public page built around a specific topic
  • Presence technology - allows members to see which contacts are online and chat

 

3          AIMS OF USING FACEBOOK

 

3.1                  

    • To promote Winsford High Street Community Primary School as a progressive school in our technological advances
    • To promote responsible use of Social Media
    • To allow staff the engage in educational discussions to enhance their own practice
    • To quickly share children’s work and school achievements and success
    • To share school announcements

 

 

 

3.2       The main school Facebook page [www.facebook.com/Winsfordhighstreetprimaryschool] will share information detailing school events and will run alongside the newsletter, emails and other traditional methods. It will not therefore replace it. Because of this, Facebook will not be used to engage with parents directly.

 

 

3.3       There will only be one Facebook page controlled by the Headteacher and administrators. It will be set up as a Business Page, therefore posts will have no indication to staff and people visiting the page will only be able to ‘Follow’ the page rather than becoming a ‘Friend’.

 

 

 

 

4          SAFEGUARDING PUPILS

 

4.1       To safeguard all pupils at Winsford High Street Community Primary School, the full name of pupils will not be published. First names may be used to reference work, but not alongside any pictures of pupils. The school seeks photographical consent of all pupils, and without this consent will not appear on any photos on Facebook outlined in the Data Protection Policy and Photographic and Video Consent Policy.

 

 

 

5          FOLLOWING THE SCHOOL PAGE

 

5.1       Any account on Facebook could follow the school accounts. Checks will take place on a regular basis of recent followers as this will appear as a notification. Users that are deemed to be unsuitable or do not add value outlined in this policy will be blocked. Decisions on this will be made on a case-by-case basis involving SLT. Parents will be encouraged to follow the school accounts. Children under the age of 13 should not have a Facebook account as outlined in Facebooks “Terms of Services Policy’. As this is the case, all pupils will be blocked. If Winsford High Street Community Primary School becomes aware that a pupil has provided personal details without parental consent, appropriate action will be taken.

 

 

6          INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT OR REFERENCING

 

 

6.1       In many ways the use of Facebook is used to express opinions. Winsford High Street Community Primary School welcomes referencing and interactions that shows the school in a positive manner. However, the school will deem inappropriate content as:

 

6.2

    • Offensive language or remarks aimed at the school, staff, parents, governors or any others affiliated with the school
    • Unsuitable content or images posted onto the page
    • Unsuitable content or images posted onto the page feed from another feed
    • Images, video or text that infringes copyright
    • No surnames of pupils will be shared – first names only
    • No children’s names next to a photo of themselves
    • Extremist views in line with the prevent duty outlined in the Extremist Policy

 

6.3       Any inappropriate content will be gathered as evidence (such as screenshots, printouts, times, dates and names where possible to insure the identity of the person who reported the incident is removed), then deleted, the users blocked and reported to Facebook. Incidents of a more serious nature will be passed onto the appropriate authorities.

 

6.4       When dealing with cases involving Facebook, a group of parents may have set up a site or page that is closed/secret to comment about, or in some cases criticise the school or an individual member of staff. It is important that staff do not become embroiled in the incident as this can sometimes inflame a situation.

 

6.5       If an individual member of staff has been targeted or mentioned, then the Head Teacher will be mindful of their duty of care to those involved and there is a specific duty on employers to protect their staff from third party harassment.

 

6.5       Headteacher and school leadership will explain to the member of staff how they intend to address the concerns and consider what support could be offered. Appropriate support will depend on the nature of the concerns and reaction of the individual. 

 

7          PARENTAL AGREEMENT AND RESPONSIBILITY

 

7.1       Each parent is asked for their permission to have images of their child to be put on Facebook. Where parents have not consented for their child to appear in a photo on Facebook, these wishes will be followed. This is outlined in the Photographic and Video Image Policy.

 

7.2       Online safety is an important part of the computing curriculum. Parent/carers are encouraged to keep children safe online and know they have a responsibility of being an online role model. Therefore, parent/carers are asked to consider how comments may be misunderstood or misinterpreted when shared online. If parents/carers have concerns or complaints regarding the school, then they are requested to use the correct and official channels, so we can work together to resolve any concerns that they may have.

Dear Parents,
We would like to invite you to our annual Harvest Festival Services. This year we will be holding two services.
 The Reception and Key Stage 1 Harvest Festival service will be in our school hall on Wednesday 10th October at 9.30am. This will be led by the Year 1 children. (Refreshments will be served in the theatre from 9.00am prior to this service.)


 The Key Stage 2 children (Years 3 – 6) will be holding their service at the United Reformed Church, Over Square, on Thursday 11th October at 10.00am. This will be led by the Year 3 children.


As part of our Harvest celebrations we have decided, once again, to support the tremendous work the Salvation Army do in our town and home community in supporting the aged, homeless and needy by providing food parcels and gifts. We would like to ask if you would support us in this venture by donating one or two small items of food which will then be boxed and presented to a representative from the Salvation Army during one of our Harvest services. The donations of food produce may be sent into school during the week beginning Monday 8th October.
Listed below are a few suggestions of items which would be suitable;


 Biscuits.
 Boxes/packets of cakes.
 Tinned food.
 Dried food.
 Coffee/ Tea bags.
 Boxes/bottles of fruit juices.
 Chocolate, chocolates, sweets.

Dear Parents


I am pleased to say that the children seem to have settled well into their new classes and are approaching their learning in a positive manner.


Summer Homework / Projects
Many thanks for the support with summer homework/ projects. It has been lovely to see a vast array of models and pieces of work produced during the summer break!


Reading
Please can we ask that all parents listen to their children read on a regular basis and talk to their child(ren) about what they have read and what they have understood (ideally daily). Although as staff we aim to listen to each child read regularly this is not sufficient and they need daily practice. To promote reading this year we are going to introduce the ‘Extreme Read’. This involves the children reading in the most unusual of places and recording this in their reading diaries. If you can take a photograph of them doing so that would be great; these can be handed into your child’s class teacher or emailed to [email protected] Team points and stickers will be awarded for the most extreme reads each week.


Printers Reading Diaries
Unfortunately we have been let down with our order of new reading diaries. We had enough in stock for the majority of the school, but Y5 and Y6 children will be given theirs as soon as they arrive. Please can Y5 / Y6 children record their reading in their homework books until we receive the new order; many thanks for your support with this matter!


New Year Group Meetings
These were held last week to enable you to meet your child’s class teacher and to inform you of the year ahead. If you were unable to attend the meetings, the information has been posted under your child’s year group on the school website.
Sadly I was also unable to attend the different meetings, as I was required to have a minor operation which had originally been scheduled for the summer holidays. I therefore hope to meet you during the coming weeks. Should the need arise please don’t hesitate to contact me through the School office.


Inset Day
As noted in my previous letter we have had to reorganise one of our school Inset days to accommodate staff training. This will now take place on Monday 15th April 2019 instead of Monday 3rd June.


Y6 Team Building Camp

This was held on the Thursday and Friday of the first week back at Forest Camp, Sandiway. The vast majority of our Y6 attended and had great fun camping, as well as supporting each other with raft building and climbing. Well done to all concerned!


Mr Askey
I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Askey gave birth to a baby boy (Arthur) during the summer break. Mr Askey will therefore be having some paternity leave. However to reduce the impact on his class, he will take each Friday until half term instead of a two week block. Mrs Lowe will cover his absence each Friday.


Mrs Lawton
I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Lawton is expecting her second child in January. She will therefore start her maternity leave after the Christmas break. As Mrs Lawton currently covers ‘planning, preparation and assessment time’ for KS2, appropriate cover will be sourced to provide continuity for the children.


Mrs Raistrick
Please note that Mrs Raistrick will start her maternity leave on Friday of this week. We wish her and her husband all the very best of luck for their forthcoming new arrival.

Team Point Awards
This year we will be changing the team point awards from certificates to stickers. The children will now receive a sticker for every 20 team points. It is hoped that these will have a more immediate impact on the children.
